"Stephen Gordon is that musician who understands the melody and the groove, and most importantly, he swings like crazy!! Doesn't matter if it's the drums or the piano!!"
- organist/multi-instrumentalist Joey DeFrancesco (Elvin Jones/Miles Davis/David Sanborn/John McLaughlin)
Welcome to my news page, everyone! I am delighted to share new and upcoming events, performances, tours, recording projects - my entire creative process with all of you. I want to extent the warmth of love and light to all of you, for as we all know and have experienced - this has truly been a trying time in our world, for all of us. We have lost some incredible masters of this music in the past year and a half, friends, family members - and yet we stay resilient and steadfast to the course, in faith and light.
2022 has been a pretty incredible year for me! With many of our beloved Jazz venues and performance halls opening back up after many of the Covid restrictions, safely I have been able to assemble some of the greatest groups I have had the opportunity to ever work with. With my first inquisition into the great pianist Thelonious Monk's music and legacy quartet, I was able to assemble the wonderful pianist, Eric Reed, saxophonist Stacy Dillard and bassist Craig Shaw at The Velvet Note in Alpharetta, GA for two nights back in February. In March, I was able to have Stacy again for a quartet date in Savannah, GA, at the Good Times Jazz Bar & Restaurant for two nights, and with that territory, I was able to have the great acoustic bassist Delbert Felix (Branford Marsalis) and pianist Louis Heriveaux.
In April, I changed directions and inquired into the music of saxophonist John Coltrane - Assembling a quartet that consisted of saxophonist Rashaan Barber, bassist Corcoran Holt (Kenny Garrett) and the great Cyrus Chestnut on piano - Performing "A Love Supreme" a four-part suite and one of the deepest, most beautiful pieces ever composed, for the Charlotte Shout Festival. Just recently, I was able to have my good friend and bandleader, vibraphonist Jason Marsalis, with me for a few performances in Savannah, GA - entering again into Good Times Jazz Club, and for the first time ever, having the opportunity to lead the incredible quartet, consisting of Jason, myself, Delbert Felix and Louis Heriveaux for a swingin' set at The Savannah Jazz Festival!
There will be far more opportunities to catch one of these great quartets again at a venue near you! I'm looking to venture into many of the songbooks of the musicians I have studied all of my life and loved their music. Sooner than later, I will be bringing forth many of my own compositions, many that I have had the pleasure to play over the years, and many new compositions that I will be presenting and composing for some pretty amazing groups I will be putting together in the coming year!
Until we meet again - May love always be with you to nurture you, light always behind you to show how far you have come, and light always within and in front of you, to guide you on your path home.
